Located just 50 miles to the south of the Florida coastline, The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is an archipelago of more than 700 sub-tropical islands and cays offering a unique combination of natural beauty, political stability, social tranquility and one of the most sophisticated and experienced financial centres in the world. Nassau, the capital, is located on the island of New Providence. The city of Nassau offers all of the conveniences of a major metropolitan area, including a thriving international banking sector and a multitude of duty free shops situated along historic Bay Street. Nassau's major tourist hotels and resorts are clustered in the Cable Beach area and on Paradise Island, which is connected to Nassau via two bridges. International hotel companies with properties in Nassau and Paradise Island include Atlantis, Club Méditerranée, Comfort Suites, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Island Outpost, Marriott, Radisson, Sandals, SuperClubs Breezes and Wyndham. Those in the market for luxurious homes tend to focus on the exclusive communities of Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay, Port New Providence, Sandyport and Paradise Island. New oceanfront condominium developments along Cable Beach and West Bay Street are also attracting a great deal of international investor attention. Government gives accelerated consideration for annual or permanent residency to owners of residences valued over $500,000. Freeport, Grand Bahama, is an economic zone which has unique tax incentives beyond those available in the rest of The Bahamas. It is home to the largest and most modern container shipping port in the region, the development of which has contributed to healthy growth in all sectors of the Freeport economy. Grand Bahama is also the second most popular tourist destination in The Bahamas. The chain of The Bahama Islands stretches over 500 miles between southeast Florida and Northern Hispanola. The Out Islands, (or Family Islands) of The Bahamas include Acklins, Abaco, Andros, the Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Inagua, Long Island and San Salvador. There are also well over 650 smaller islands and cays, a number of which are privately owned. Each of the Family Islands has its own distinct character, topography and unique attractions. Bahamasair, the national airline, offers regularly scheduled flights to Nassau, Freeport and all major Out Island airports. Charter flights are also readily available to accommodate individual travel schedules throughout the Out Islands. Direct flights to Nassau are currently available from numerous US cities including Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Miami, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Tampa and West Palm Beach. International destinations with direct flights include Grand Cayman, Havana, Kingston, London, Milan, Montego Bay, Turks & Caicos Islands and Toronto. All other major international destinations can be reached via Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, both of which are located less than one hour's flight from Nassau.
